Learn what a smart building is and how artificial intelligence can improve your facility's energy efficiency, comfort and security.
Quick Facts
A smart building, also called an intelligent building, leverages building automation for energy efficiency, comfort, and resilience. The core principle of a smart building is the use of data and automation to enhance the occupant experience while improving energy efficiency and reducing operational costs. Connecting HVAC systems, lighting, security, and IoT (internet of things) sensors and using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning systems can create a more sustainable building and help your organization achieve decarbonization goals.
Smart building technology ranges from smart thermostats for smaller spaces to building management systems (BMS) for large buildings or enterprise-wide applications. They often offer remote access through secure applications for monitoring and control.
Using data from a variety of sources, such as sensors, weather forecasts, and energy prices, smart building controls can adjust systems proactively to conserve energy, optimize comfort, alert facility managers to maintenance requirements and ensure the security of the occupants.
Highly advanced smart buildings incorporate a suite of integrated technologies that enable real-time data collection, analysis, and automated control. The components of this suite may include the following:
