FAQs

Your questions about packaged unit & rooftop heat pumps, answered.

A heat pump packaged rooftop unit is a self-contained HVAC system, typically installed on a roof, that provides both heating and cooling. In cooling mode, it removes heat from indoor air and releases it outside, much like a standard air conditioner. In heating mode, it reverses the refrigerant flow to pull heat from the outdoor air and move it indoors. This makes it an efficient all-in-one option, especially in mild to moderate climates.

A commercial split system heat pump works by using separate indoor and outdoor units to move heat rather than generate it directly. In cooling mode, the split system heat pump absorbs heat from inside the building and releases it outdoors, like a standard air-conditioning system. In heating mode, it reverses the refrigerant flow to pull heat from the outdoor air and transfer it indoors. This design provides both heating and cooling in one efficient system, especially in mild to moderate climates.

Yes, packaged rooftop units and split systems are available as heat pumps.

Yes, packaged rooftop heat pumps can be very efficient, especially in mild to moderate climates where outdoor temperatures do not stay extremely low for long periods. Packaged rooftop heat pumps are efficient because they move heat instead of generating it directly, which usually requires less energy than electric resistance heating. Their real-world efficiency depends on factors such as outdoor temperature, unit size and design, controls, building load, duct leakage, and maintenance.
