Learn how a dual-fuel heat pump can provide more efficient, reliable heating and cooling year-round.
Quick Facts
A dual-fuel heat pump, also known as a dual-fuel heat system or hybrid heat pump system, is a packaged rooftop HVAC unit that combines an electric heat pump with a secondary fossil-fuel heating source (typically a gas-fired furnace or gas/propane heat exchanger) and automatic controls that switch between the two heat sources. The system uses the heat pump as the primary heating source for most conditions and automatically transitions to the fossil-fuel heat source when outdoor temperatures, load conditions, or economics make the fuel option preferable.
Dual-fuel systems intelligently switch between the electric heat pump and the gas furnace to maintain comfort while maximizing energy efficiency. The system's operation is guided by outdoor temperature sensors and a smart thermostat.
During warmer months, the heat pump functions as a standard air conditioner, transferring heat from inside the building to the outside. In milder heating seasons, the heat pump reverses this process, efficiently extracting heat from the outdoor air and moving it indoors.
When the outdoor temperature drops to a point where the heat pump can no longer operate efficiently, the system automatically switches to the gas furnace to provide powerful heating. This seamless transition ensures the building remains comfortably warm even in very cold conditions. Once the outdoor temperature rises again, the system will switch back to the more energy-efficient heat pump.
Trane offers a variety of dual-fuel heat pumps to fit commercial applications, from a small retail store to a large office building. To determine the best rooftop unit for your building, contact your local Trane representative.
