Cybersecurity is an important aspect of connected buildings and facilities management. Learn how cybersecurity fits into building systems.
Quick Facts
Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting digital systems, networks, devices, and data from unauthorized access, disruption, damage, or theft. In the built environment, cybersecurity covers everything from controllers on rooftop units and building automation systems (BAS) to cloud services, mobile apps, and software platforms that manage maintenance, assets, space and occupancy.
Historically, building equipment was not connected to the internet. Today, with the rise of smart buildings, cloud-based asset management, and Wi-Fi-enabled HVAC equipment, facility systems are part of the internet of things (IoT). This connectivity unlocks powerful data but requires rigorous protection to prevent bad actors from disrupting building operations, exposing sensitive data or causing safety risks and financial harm.
While IT cybersecurity protects emails and bank records, OT (operational technology) cybersecurity protects the physical systems that run the building:
Cybersecurity should be a focus of facility managers and building owners for several reasons:
Resources for Cybersecurity
As you adopt smarter building technologies, from BAS to integrated workplace management systems (IWMS), cybersecurity should be part of the conversation from day one. It's not about avoiding connectivity; it's about connecting securely. Learn more by contacting your local Trane representative today.
