What Does Decarbonization Mean?

The definition of decarbonization is the process of significantly reducing or eliminating carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the atmosphere. This can be applied to a country, an economy, a company, or an individual's activities.

Decarbonization is critical in the global effort to combat climate change and create a more sustainable world for future generations. The primary driver for this is the need to limit global warming, as outlined in international agreements like the Paris Agreement, which aims to keep the global temperature increase well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Electrification of heating: Shifting from fossil fuel-based heating systems like boilers to high-efficiency electric heat pumps is a primary strategy. Heat pumps can provide both heating and cooling, and when powered by renewable electricity, they can significantly reduce a building's carbon footprint.
