However, Hawaii’s data center landscape hadn’t seen major investment in 20 years, leaving local organizations dependent on aging systems vulnerable to the islands’ unique threats. In their mission to create Hawaii’s most reliable data center, SERVPAC faced multiple obstacles.
The remote island location created complex logistics for specialized equipment delivery and installation and the facility needed robust protection against hurricanes, tsunamis, and sea-level rise. Meeting the rigorous requirements for Tier IV certification (the industry’s highest standard) demanded fault-tolerant systems with complete redundancy where every component could be maintained without impacting operations.
Additionally, Hawaii’s warm climate and high energy costs required cooling solutions that could deliver reliability without excessive operational expenses. Achieving these goals demanded strategic planning to deliver advanced cooling technology and consultative expertise in this challenging environment.

The right solution centered on implementing Trane® / Mitsubishi Electric VRF Systems that are engineered specifically to meet the stringent requirements for Tier IV data center operations in Hawaii’s challenging environment.
This advanced equipment included Trane® / Mitsubishi Electric Y Series Air-Cooled Condensing Units (ACCUs), City Multi Fan Coil Units (FCUs), and TE-200A Central Controller with duplicate redundant systems throughout the facility, ensuring seamless operation even during maintenance or component failure.

Achieving the level of resiliency they wanted required fault-tolerant systems where every component must perform flawlessly under any circumstance. The proven reliability and quiet operation of Trane / Mitsubishi units were features that drove the success of this project.
The Results
SERVPAC’s MTP Data Center achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first data center in Hawaii to receive the official Uptime Institute Tier IV Certification of Constructed Facility Award, guaranteeing 99.995% uptime with a maximum of 26 minutes of downtime annually. This success extends beyond immediate operational gains, contributing to Hawaii’s digital infrastructure resilience, enabling SERVPAC to operate more sustainably while reducing operational costs.
Building on the success of Phase 1, Trane Hawaii’s ongoing collaboration spans multiple project phases. Most recently, Trane provided Trane® / Mitsubishi Electric equipment for a new building under construction in 2025, demonstrating the long-term value of this strategic collaboration in advancing Hawaii’s technological capabilities.
