FAQS
Your questions about CITY MULTI® indoor units, answered.
A VRF indoor unit is the part of the system that delivers heating or cooling to a specific zone inside a building. It connects to an outdoor unit — which houses the system’s compressor — through refrigerant piping (or water lines in HVRF systems). The indoor unit uses a fan and coil to condition air for that room or zone. While it operates independently for localized comfort, it’s always part of a larger VRF system that includes at least one outdoor unit.
Indoor units receive either refrigerant or water from the system. A heat exchanger inside the unit either adds heat to or removes it from the air in the room. A fan then circulates the conditioned air into the space. Each unit operates independently, allowing different zones to be set to different temperatures.
Trane® / Mitsubishi Electric CITY MULTI® indoor units come in several styles to match room layout and design needs. Common types include:
- Wall-mounted units
- Ceiling cassettes (two-way, four-way)
- Ceiling-concealed ducted units
- Floor-mounted units
- Vertical/horizontal ducted air handlers (for larger zones or integration with ducts)
These styles vary in appearance, airflow pattern and installation method, but all serve the same core purpose: delivering zone-level comfort.
