APPA 2013 Attendees Learn about Meeting Sustainability Goals from Trane by Improving Infrastructure and Energy Efficiency

Minneapolis, Aug. 1, 2013 — Energy-saving infrastructure solutions and leveraging purchasing power can help college administrators manage budgets while increasing sustainability on their campuses.

Experts from Trane, a leading global provider of indoor comfort solutions and services and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, will educate attendees at APPA 2013, held Aug. 2-4 at the Hyatt Regency in Minneapolis, about energy saving that can benefit their bottom lines while increasing sustainability.

Trane and education leaders will offer case study solutions that detail energy-saving, sustainability solutions:

Rich Penner, a comprehensive solutions district leader for Trane, and Pam D. Metcalf, energy and environmental manager, Central Piedmont Community College, will address how improvements at Central Piedmont Community College, North Carolina’s largest community college, are expected to generate $350,000 in annual energy savings. The improvements addressed aging infrastructure and deferred maintenance. The project included upgrades to the central campus utility plant and five other campus buildings.

The $3.6 million in improvements completed at the college reflect the school’s strong commitment to sustainability, which is also evident in its curriculum offerings, including a new Center for Sustainability which focuses on student and professional sustainability education. The upgrades represent initial steps toward transforming the college’s facilities into high performance buildings which tie to the school’s educational mission.

Neil Maldeis, P.E. (professional engineer) and CEM, (Association of Energy Engineers Certified Energy Manager), energy engineering manager for Trane, will discuss how infrastructure upgrades can improve the academic environment. Maldeis will address market trends and challenges, describe the importance of an energy conservation plan and discuss case study examples of schools that have improved their infrastructure systems and the benefits they have gained as a result.

Jon Symko, a senior account manager of education and government vertical sales for Trane, and Stuart Verdon of The Cooperative Purchasing Network (TCPN), will demonstrate ways that higher education leaders can maintain a satisfactory educational environment while continuing to deal with budget cuts. They will discuss how using cooperative purchasing helps schools achieve greater efficiencies while ensuring credibility and confidence in business procedures by maintaining open competition for purchases and complying with purchasing laws and ethical business practices.

Trane leader moderating panel discussion
Patrick Archambault, strategic account and program leader for Trane, will moderate a panel discussion about the challenges of space management. In this era of constrained budgets, declining state support, and increasing tuition fees, institutions are assessing their limited resources and realizing that their space needs an effective management strategy. Panelists will address how to finance coming advancements, offer best practices and address the new meaning of space in campuses.

About the Trane Leaders
Rich Penner, a solutions district leader for Trane, and accredited professional in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), has more than 25 years of industry experience, having served in many roles with Trane since 1988. He is a member of the North Carolina Energy Services Coalition and the United States Green Building Council. In 1987, he graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in industrial engineering. He completed the Trane Graduate Engineering Training program, prior to joining the commercial sales office of Trane in Charlotte, N.C. During his tenor at Trane, Penner has served every vertical market ─including schools, universities, hospitals, commercial office, and industrial clients─ in support of their building system needs.

Neil Maldeis, Professional Engineer and Association of Energy Engineers Certified Energy Manager, is energy solutions engineering leader for Trane, a leading global provider of indoor comfort solutions and services and a brand of Ingersoll Rand. He is responsible for the technical development, support and review of performance-based contracting solutions and activities on a national basis. He has more than 30 years of experience as a mechanical/project engineer in the building construction and energy conservation fields.

Jon Symko, a senior account manager of education and government vertical sales for Trane, is responsible for Cooperative Purchasing Network contract development. Symko has 41 years of experience in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning business, including working in the controls, consulting and turnkey sectors. He is a past president of the ASHRAE Houston Chapter, 2002-03 regional vice chair of programs for Region VIII of ASHRAE and was previously a regional member of the ASHRAE nominations committee as well the treasurer for ASHRAE Region VIII. He is currently the regional vice chair for Grassroots Government Affairs for Region VIII of ASHRAE.

Patrick Archambault is strategic account and program leader for Trane. Archambault and his team are responsible for successfully leading and executing strategic sales activities for Trane, including strategic account development and management, and also special programs. This includes working with customers in a variety of industries and leveraging technical and business resources that Trane offers for the benefit of those customers. Archambault brings 30 years of experience in strategic sales, program management, operations, service, and process improvement. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of St Thomas in St Paul, Minn.
