Heat Pump Electrification and Sustainable Chiller Innovation

Air to Water Heat Pump Cascade System

Air-to-Water Cascade Heat Pump Systems

A versatile high-temperature boiler replacement solution

Retrofitting conventional boilers with a cascade heat pump system is one of the most cost-effective and straightforward ways to electrify heating in existing commercial buildings. Trane’s “comprehensive system” guidance for hydronic heating assures reliable, high-temperature performance. It allows the HVAC infrastructure and distribution to stay in place, which helps reduce design, installation and CAPEX costs.

By utilizing our packaged air-to-water heat pump (model ACX) to provide a stable source of heat, our water-to-water heat pump in a cascade arrangement can consistently deliver boiler-like high hot water supply temperatures up to 165°F (74°C).

The result is an easy-to-retrofit solution that heats effectively and is three times more efficient than conventional boilers. Our cascade system is part of Trane’s Comprehensive Heat Pump Chiller System portfolio, which can be supported by 24/7 connected building management and energy monitoring services. In addition, the system is flexible for use with soon-to-be-released innovations that will allow for up to 200 °F hot water supply and operate to even lower ambient temperatures down to -15 °F.

Domestic Hot Water Heat Pump T270WM Right Angle Transparent

Trane® Domestic Hot Water Heat Pumps (DHWHP)

Our entrance into new (yet familiar) territory

Now, you can get a domestic hot water heating system and HVAC system from a single supplier. Trane’s Domestic Hot Water Heat Pumps are another crucial step toward building decarbonization when replacing boiler systems. With COPs exceeding 4, it delivers best-in-class efficiency compared to other forms of electric hot water heating. Stack sustainability benefits by incorporating hydronic heat recovery and free cooling capabilities, which capture and repurpose waste heat from cooling towers and chillers.

In many facilities, gas boilers account for 4% to 37% of total natural gas consumption for water heating, depending on the building type. Besides being less efficient, gas boilers contribute significantly to CO₂ emissions, complicating sustainability efforts. Whether you’re designing a new building or replacing an aging boiler system, integrating a domestic heat pump water heating solution can help  boost energy efficiency and reduce operational costs. Trane DHWHPs offer:

  • A cleaner, more sustainable solution that eliminates fossil fuel use and is 150% more efficient than electric systems.
  • Seamless integration with your building’s HVAC system, capturing and repurposing excess heat to enhance overall efficiency.
  • Compatible with district energy systems and can support geothermal loops, providing ultra-efficient water heating even from sources as low as 35 °F, and can produce water temperatures up to 175°F.

Remote Resolution Center

Integrated voice response and critical alarm management, plus staff supplementation

Tracer® SC+ or Symbio® controls can alert building staff immediately and automatically when something may be wrong. But not all facilities have adequate staff to monitor it.

That’s an easy hand off to the Trane Remote Resolution Center. Here, our technology and trained professionals are available 24/7/365 to initiate the right course of action as needed.

  • Integrated Voice Response (IVR) sends building staff an automated phone call or email immediately, the second your connected control system indicates any critical alarm.
  • Critical Alarm Management (CAM) activates Trane factory technicians to triage critical alarms; first running remote diagnostics and then activating your preferred resolution plan if necessary.
  • Staff Supplementation enables our central team to handle simple adjustments and operator-level activities, freeing up building staff to focus on more pressing issues.
