What Is a Ductless Heat Pump?

A ductless heat pump, also known as a mini-split system, is a heating and cooling system that transfers heat between indoor and outdoor environments without requiring traditional ductwork. Using refrigerant technology, it extracts heat from outside air to warm indoor spaces in winter, and reverses the process to cool them in summer.

Key characteristics of a ductless heat pump:

No ductwork required: Indoor units connect directly to an outdoor compressor via refrigerant lines, making installation easier in buildings without existing ducts
Zoned comfort control: Individual indoor units can be controlled independently, allowing customized temperature settings for different spaces
Energy efficient: Heat pumps move heat rather than generate it, typically using less energy than traditional heating systems
Specific uses: Ductless heat pumps are ideal solutions for targeted climate control (zoning), building additions, or retrofitting commercial spaces where installing traditional ductwork is impractical or too costly.
