Award-Winning Project: 2025 Top Project of the Year Award for Energy Innovation by Environment+Energy Leader.

EnerSys
  • EnerSys aims to eliminate direct fossil fuel use by 2040.
  • Multi-site energy strategy designed to improve efficiency, resilience and operating cost performance.
  • $20M Green Revolving Fund supports continued investment in facility efficiency improvements.
  • Recognized with 2025 Top Project of the Year Award for Energy Innovation from Environment+Energy Leader.

The Challenge: Preparing EnerSys Facilities for Long-Term Energy Resilience

EnerSys supplies stored energy solutions that support reliability and resilience for customers in industrial, infrastructure, and other mission-critical environments.

The company saw an opportunity to apply that same focus to its own facilities by improving operational resilience, reducing exposure to energy volatility, and strengthening long-term facility performance.

Addressing these priorities required a portfolio-level view of operations, energy use and investment opportunities. Building on a decades-long relationship, EnerSys and Trane worked together to identify and prioritize facility improvements that could deliver strong financial returns while supporting broader resource efficiency and operational performance goals.

The Solution: An Enterprise Energy Management Strategy

“As we looked at our goals, it became clear that meaningful progress would require more than a series of individual projects,” said Sam Shiroff, Senior Director of Global Sustainability at EnerSys. “We needed an enterprise strategy that could scale across our facilities and create momentum over time.”

An energy strategy backed by practical funding

Through an extensive evaluation of facilities and operations, Trane helped EnerSys develop a programmatic roadmap designed to guide a long-term transition toward greater energy efficiency and operational resilience across facilities.

The upgrades detailed in the plan are backed by a $20M Green Revolving Fund designed to finance energy efficiency improvements that lower operating costs and reduce emissions. The cost savings boost the bottom line and replenish the fund for investment in the next round of green, energy efficiency upgrades, establishing a sustainable funding cycle.

To help advance the roadmap, EnerSys has established a formal Climate Action Committee to help drive implementation across the organization.

Scaling energy efficiency across multiple facilities

The enterprise program launched with a breakthrough automation and controls upgrade at the EnerSys battery manufacturing plant in Warrensburg, MO. Serving as the first phase of a broader multi-site, multi-year initiative, the project established a foundation for reducing emissions while strengthening energy resilience and supporting long-term goals.

The Warrensburg battery manufacturing plant upgrades now deliver more than 1,900 mtCO2e in operational emissions reductions and approximately $250,000 in annual energy savings.

From there, the work expanded to boiler, compressed air, and domestic hot water upgrades at the Richmond, KY facility, and a comprehensive energy optimization initiative at EnerSys headquarters in Reading, PA.

The collaboration has expanded to additional facility upgrades and energy optimization work across several EnerSys sites, including: controls, lighting, and air compressor upgrades at two Springfield plants; a lighting and air compressor optimization at Warrensburg; and a combined controls, lighting, heat pump, and air compressor upgrade at Horsham, PA. The Horsham initiative is projected to support more than $45,000 in annual energy savings, based on current project estimates.

We’re proving that energy resilience and business performance don’t have to compete. By prioritizing both, we’re uncovering efficiencies and savings that are helping strengthen our operations and help us manage energy with greater confidence.

Christina Sivulka Global Sustainability Senior Manager at EnerSys

The Results: Measurable Energy Efficiency Gains and Stronger Operational Resilience

Together with Trane, EnerSys is building a stronger infrastructure foundation designed to deliver benefits beyond emissions reduction, including reduced exposure to energy volatility, improved operational stability, and greater control over long-term energy costs.

“We’re proving that energy resilience and business performance don’t have to compete. By prioritizing both, we’re uncovering efficiencies and savings that are helping strengthen our operations and help us manage energy with greater confidence,” said Christina Sivulka, Global Sustainability Senior Manager at EnerSys.

Trane has helped EnerSys capture substantial utility incentives, including rebates supporting the Warrensburg project, and secured around $490,000 in grant funding through Pennsylvania for the Horsham initiative.

Beyond Green Revolving Fund support, the program has earned significant industry recognition. In 2025, the EnerSys decarbonization program received the Top Project of the Year Award for Energy Innovation from Environment+Energy Leader, recognizing the program as a model for industrial manufacturers, signifying that the program isn’t just working, it’s worth replicating. The Warrensburg, Missouri, battery manufacturing facility upgrades also received a U.S. Department of Energy Better Plants Award, further validating the program's impact.

“This work shows how manufacturers can take a structured, portfolio-level approach to energy management,” said Trevor Joelson, Energy & Decarbonization Services Account Executive at Trane. “By building a roadmap and prioritizing projects with clear operational and financial value, companies can make measurable progress while strengthening facility performance.”

Overall, EnerSys’ journey toward Scope 1 neutrality by 2040 reflects a commitment not only to reducing emissions through electrification and energy efficiency, but also to building stronger energy resilience and greater operational stability for the future.
