Acer Arena

A TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE AT AN OLYMPIC VENUE.

TRANE SAVES AUSTRALIA’S TOP ENTERTAINMENT SPOT OVER $100,000 WITH INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS.

FOR TRANE, THE SAVINGS AREN’T ALWAYS OBVIOUS.

The Acer Arena (formerly known as the Sydney Superdome) is the largest entertainment and sporting arena in Australia. It is not just the former home of the Sydney Olympics or Australia’s number one venue, it is also inarguably one of the most technologically advanced and environmentally responsible indoor arenas in the world. In short, it is exactly the kind of project where Trane is a perfect fit. There was only one problem — Trane didn’t submit the winning bid.

ON CLOSER INSPECTION, TRANE IS THE SMARTER CHOICE.

But even though Trane’s initial bid appeared higher, they were able to show the system designer that by using Trane’s EarthWise chiller designs, they could reduce piping, valve sizes, cooling tower size and water pumps. This would result in installation savings of over $100,000, and made Trane the obvious smart choice. With the job now won, Trane installed three 830-ton Model RTHC chillers, each with an impressive COP of 5.6 or better.

WHEN YOU LOOK DEEPER, YOU FIND A LOT MORE

The system designer already knew the benefits of having a large temperature difference on the chilled waterside, but Trane also recommended an alternative low condenser flow rate as well. This resulted in even more cost savings. By using Trane’s System Analyzer HVAC, an economic analysis showed, this design offered an annual operating cost savings of six percent. For an indoor arena with a 21,000 seating capacity, six percent is substantial. The Acer Arena looked beyond the bottom line and found better performance and bigger savings — two things that are always pleasant to find.

“The chillers have not had any problems and have been running like clockwork.” Chris Eastaugh, Building Services Manager, Acer Arena.
