Ductless System Maintenance

Learn best practices for taking care of your system, so you can avoid costly repairs.

How to take care of your ductless system for peak performance

With proper care and cleaning, your ductless mini split will run better and more efficiently for years to come. From mini split air conditioning to mini split heat pumps, these tips and tricks will help maintain all types of ductless systems.

Multi-zone ductless systems connect several indoor units to one outdoor unit, while single-zone ductless systems connect just one indoor unit with one outdoor unit. Ductless systems can include several different configurations including ductless air conditioners or ductless heat pumps. Multi-zone ductless systems connect several indoor units to one outdoor unit. While most ductless system maintenance should be performed by your local dealer, there are a few preventative maintenance measures and cleaning tips you can take to maximize the efficiency of your ductless system. Before starting any ductless mini-split maintenance, remember to turn off each component in the system, including the outdoor and indoor units.

Keep your ductless system clean
Wipe down the outside of the unit with a damp cloth to prevent dust from accumulating.

Make sure there is space around the unit
Don’t put bookcases, picture frames or any other furniture close to a mini split HVAC.

Clean the filters of your ductless system
Each indoor unit has a removable air filter that should be cleaned regularly. Clean these filters at least as often as recommended in your owner manual, or more often if your family is sensitive to dust or has pets. Clean these filters at least as often as recommended in your user manual, or more often if your family is sensitive to dust or if you own pets.

Clean the condenser
Make sure your ductless system outdoor unit is powered off, then, using a garden hose, spray any dust and dirt off of the coil. Avoid using high water pressure, as the fins can be easily bent. If you accidentally bend some of the fins, they can be easily bent back into place with a special alignment comb.

Your mini split system or ductless system operates just like a traditional system — except without the ductwork. So, you should have your ductless system serviced by a professional twice a year — once before heating season and again before cooling season. Here are a few of the things your local Trane dealer will check for during your ductless system service appointment:

  • Check electrical connections
All electrical connections inside the condensing unit should be spot-checked for loose connections, short circuits or evidence of overheating.
  • Check the run capacitors
The run capacitors should be checked for bulging, deformation or leaks. If any are present, faulty run capacitors should be replaced.
  • Look for refrigerant leaks
Refrigerant lines should be checked for signs of leaks, and patched or replaced where necessary. Leaks are especially common at flare connections, which may need to be tightened.
  • Check the drain hose for blockages
The hose that moves condensation from the evaporator units should also be checked to make sure water is flowing freely.

Here a few common problems and quick fixes to try if your ductless system isn’t working properly.

Problem: Water leaks.
Solution: Check your drain line or pan. It may be clogged or over-filled.

Problem: Ductless system not keeping room warm or cold enough.
Solution: Check your filters. They may need to be cleaned or replaced.

  • Only use it when you need it
Your mini split heating and cooling is very efficient— but that efficiency can be decreased if you keep it turned on when you’re not using it. Be smart.
  • Keep it clean and the area around it clear
Keep dust and debris from building up on the unit itself and keep dust collecting furniture and art away.
  • Schedule annual ductless system service checks
Your ductless system needs routine maintenance to operate at its best, just like a conventional HVAC system. We recommend having it checked out before the heating season and again before cooling season.
