We’ve all had that experience when ordering something on Amazon – you see a comparison chart at the bottom of a product page. Sometimes it confirms your decision on what to buy, and sometimes it changes your mind.
Shopping for a new heat pump system can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. We’ve pulled together some information on how to compare heat pumps, including a chart with side-by-side comparisons, as well as a few reviews of our heat pump equipment.
But before you compare heat pumps, you need to understand a little about efficiency metrics, compressor speeds, and decibels.
Efficiency matters
Compressor speeds
We have variable-speed, multi-speed, and single-stage heat pumps. How does that translate into efficiency? We asked one of our experts.
“The number of speeds or stages typically translates to better energy efficiency and better comfort… so the more variability or number of stages, the more efficient the equipment will operate and the better temperature and humidity control the system can deliver to your home,”
- Mark Woodruff, Senior Product Manager, Ducted Outdoor

SEER2
A heat pump or AC unit’s SEER2, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio, measures the average cooling efficiency of a unit over the entire cooling season, with temperatures ranging from 65°F to 104°F. The higher the SEER2 rating, the better the unit is at keeping you cool.
“SEER2 measures efficiency in the cooling mode (i.e. in the summertime). This may be more important in hot climates that have long, hot, and humid summers vs a region with short and mild summer temperatures. Our advice is to weigh the pros and cons of the system as a whole.” Woodruff added.
Learn more in our blog What’s a Good SEER2 Rating?
EER2
EER2 stands for energy efficiency ratio and represents the unit’s cooling efficiency at a specific set of conditions: outside temperature of 95°F, indoor temperature of 80°F, and 50% humidity. If you have long summers where the temperature routinely reaches or exceeds 95°F %, the EER2 rating might be more important than the SEER2 rating.
HSPF2
HSPF2 stands for heating seasonal performance factor and is a metric specific to heat pumps. It measures the heat pump’s heating efficiency. The higher the HSPF2 rating, the more efficient the unit is at heating. This can be a very important factor if you live in a moderate to cold climate.
Heating capacity ratio
A heat pump’s heating capacity ratio tells you how low the outdoor temperature can be while the unit still provides 100% of your heating. It also tells you what temperature the unit can still provide 70% of your heating needs. If you live in a colder climate, this can help you select a gas furnace to pair with your heat pump in a dual-fuel, or hybrid heating system.
Noise level
The noise an outdoor heat pump makes can be a factor if the heat pump is right next to your patio, under a bedroom window, or homes in your neighborhood are very close together. The noise level is measured in decibels, represented in the table by dBA.
According to noiseawareness.org, a noise level of 50 equates to rainfall. A noise level between 60 and 70 is between the hum of a refrigerator and the noise from a dishwasher. Our heat pumps have different sound levels, with variable speed systems being the quietest when they’re running at a lower speed, and single-stage units being the loudest.
OK, now that you know what the numbers mean, it’s time to compare Trane heat pumps. The graphic below shows you how our various heat pumps compare across the metrics we just mentioned.
