Poor indoor air quality was negatively impacting the learning environment while utility costs were increasing.
William Blount High School’s existing HVAC system was aging. There were moisture and humidity concerns, and space temperatures were inconsistent throughout the 180,000 square foot school. Much of the existing HVAC systems consisted of the original units installed when the school was built in 1978 and the Building Automation System (BAS) was obsolete. Energy costs were rising due to a stressed building envelop. The school had a limited budget and wanted the upgrades complete by the start of the 2020 school year.

Trane’s team of energy experts performed a comprehensive audit and suggested a variety of upgrades that would immediately improve the interior environment and be recognizable by teachers, students and parents entering the facility.
Aging HVAC systems were replaced with new, energy efficient units including air handlers, variable air volume units, dedicated outdoor air units and some new ductwork to adequately heat and cool the spaces within the school. The obsolete BAS system was replaced with integrated Trane Direct Digital Controls (DDC) that allows for much better comfort, control and energy efficiency. In addition, Blount County Schools installed new flooring and ceiling tiles; refreshing the interior of the building.

In the end, William Blount High School got an efficient long-term solution that will result in lower utility costs. The improved indoor quality and infrastructure upgrades allow instruction and learning in a comfortable, clean and healthy environment for teachers and students.
