Residential HVAC Repair Resource Guide

By Anne Fonda

If you’re like most homeowners, you don’t think a lot about your heating and cooling system until something goes wrong. While most HVAC companies can repair any brand of HVAC equipment, if you have a Trane variable speed system, we recommend that a Trane dealer service your system. They are specially trained on our systems and can more quickly offer a solution.

Below, we’ve pulled together some resources covering several categories to help you navigate the HVAC repair process.

General HVAC Repair

If you’re a first-time homeowner, handling HVAC repairs may be a little overwhelming, but it doesn’t need to be. Just like you would when shopping for a new car, shop around for a reliable HVAC company. Do your homework on your options and what to expect when an HVAC technician arrives at your home.

These resources can help ensure the best experience.

What the experts say

“Have a repair vs replace conversation with your dealer/contractor.  Beware of HVAC companies that may push you to replace your system unnecessarily.  We recommend talking to a Trane Comfort Specialist to be sure you get the best advice.”

- Mark Woodruff, Senior Product Manager, Air Conditioners

Refrigerant-related repairs

The age of your air conditioner or heat pump and the type of refrigerant it uses can affect your repair costs, depending on the issue. Refrigerant is the lifeblood of your air conditioning system or heat pump system that lets the system cool (and heat in the case of a heat pump) your home. Here are a few quick resources to bring you up to speed on refrigerants.

Air conditioner repair resources

There are few things as uncomfortable as coming home on a hot summer’s day, expecting to relax in your nice, cool air conditioning, and being faced with a sweltering home instead.

Do some investigating. Is your air conditioner blowing hot air instead of cold? Did it quit altogether? Before you call for AC repair, or while you wait for the HVAC technician to arrive, do a little homework with these articles.

Heat pump repair resources

Heat pump repair when it’s an issue with cooling is similar to AC repair, as both units have similar inner workings. But since your heat pump does double duty to both cool AND heat your home, it’s best to work with an HVAC company experienced with heat pumps, from system design and installation to maintenance and repair.

If your heat pump system is still under warranty, we would recommend calling your installer to handle any repairs you might need. The following are some handy resources for homeowners.

Furnace repair resources

If you have a furnace, you likely live in an area with colder winters. Whether it’s an oil or gas furnace, when it’s not keeping you and your family warm, you need to schedule furnace repair. Be prepared for the cost of repairs and whether you need to start thinking about replacing your furnace by reading these articles.

Ductwork and ventilation

Your HVAC system’s ductwork and return air vent system are out of sight, out of mind. If you’re experiencing hot and cold spots, unusually high energy bills, excessive dust, or excessive condensation, leaky ductwork may be to blame.

Ductwork repair may also be needed if you’re installing a new energy-efficient HVAC system and you want it to live up to its potential. Sealing ductwork or replacing sections of it can solve a lot of problems.

To help reduce the need for HVAC repairs, keep up with regular maintenance, such as changing your HVAC air filter every 30-90 days. This can help system efficiency as well as improve indoor air quality. Visit our HVAC Maintenance Tips page for more information.
