1. Brand 

No matter what you’re buying, the brand will always affect pricing. Whether it’s a purchase as big as a new car or something like deciding where you shop for groceries, there are budget brands, middle-of-the-road brands, and premium brands.

2. Capacity needed for your home size 

A central air conditioner’s cooling capacity is measured in tons. In general, units range in size from 2 tons to 5 tons, with smaller capacity units being suited for smaller homes and larger capacity units being suited for larger homes. 

It’s important that your replacement unit be sized properly for your home via a load calculation. Both oversized and undersized units can cause comfort issues and unnecessarily high energy bills.

3. SEER2 efficiency rating 

SEER2 stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It measures an air conditioner’s (or heat pump’s) cooling efficiency average over the entire cooling season. The higher the SEER2 rating, the more efficient the air conditioning unit is at cooling. 

A higher SEER2 can be a big deal if you live in a hot and humid area vs an area with mild summers with low humidity.

4. Number of stages or speeds 

Central air conditioners come in several types: single-stage, two-stage, multi-speed, and variable speed.  

Single-stage systems are either ‘On’ or ‘Off’.  That means they either run 100% full power or they are off.  These units are the cheapest upfront, but will cost more to operate in the long-term. 

Two-stage systems are more efficient than single-stage units, and will have a high speed and a low speed (usually 100% and 70% respectively), or be off.  

Multi-speed systems are a newer design and straddle the gap between traditional two-stage systems and variable speed.  They offer better efficiency than single or two-stage systems but are simpler than variable speed systems. They cost more than 1-or 2-stage units, but less than a variable speed unit. 

Variable speed air conditioners are the most efficient as they can vary their output and draw the least amount of power required to maintain your desired temperature. This means they will run for longer at lower speeds for optimal comfort. They cost the most upfront, but can help you save energy for years to come.

“Variable speed systems are quieter (both inside and outside the house), more efficient, offer better temperature and humidity control, and have the greatest onboard diagnostics data to monitor system performance and reliability.  It is up to the homeowner to decide how important those features are to them,” Woodruff continued 

5. Local labor costs 

If your home is in a high-cost-of-living (HCOL) area, your new air conditioner will come with a higher price tag than if you lived in a low-cost-of-living (LCOL) area. That’s because HVAC companies in your area need to pay their HVAC technicians a reasonable wage to keep the best talent.  

Those higher labor and operating costs will get passed on to you, the homeowner. It’s the same way a car dealer in California will have a higher dealer markup than a car dealer in Iowa, for instance. Higher demand and the local cost of living impact your final costs. 

6. The HVAC contractor you choose 

Some companies will have lower AC replacement cost estimates than others. Part of this will depend on the brand they are recommending, but it can also be affected by their business operating model.  

Are they a small mom-and-pop shop run out of the owner’s home, or are they a large company with multiple locations, a fleet of vans, and a big marketing budget? The overhead costs may impact the quote(s) they give you.

Do I really need to replace my furnace at the same time? 

Maybe. If your furnace is relatively new and your HVAC company can find you a compatible air conditioner, you might be able to get away with just replacing the outdoor AC unit and the indoor coil. 

However, if your furnace is older, it might be more cost-effective and provide better comfort and efficiency year-round if you replace the entire HVAC system at once.
