The 2010 version of ASHRAE Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, will be published in fall of 2010. Significantly, the goal of ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010 was to achieve 30 percent energy-cost savings compared to 90.1-2004.

Mick Schwedler, immediate past Chair of the ASHRAE Standard 90.1 committee and Susanna Hanson, 90.1 mechanical sub-committee member, provide an overview of the mechanical changes that pertain to HVAC systems and provide an update of the modeling section (Appendix G). Discussion also includes other significant changes made to the scope, lighting, building envelope and modeling sections of the standard, which will affect load calculations and equipment sizing.

What you will learn:

  • How 90.1-2010 will save close to 30 percent energy cost over 2004
  • Major changes, with specific emphasis on mechanical related system design, control and modeling.
  • Mechanical updates, including equipment efficiencies, design requirements for hydronics, airside, and ventilation.
  • Controls updates for system design and operation.
  • Modeling changes for Appendix G baseline definitions and proposed buildings.
  • Summaries for lighting, envelope and other changes.
  • This ENL has a supplemental Engineers Newsletter article.
