FAQs: C.D.S. Software Activation

Why are you implementing license activation?

We are implementing activation software to better manage our customer database and to ensure that only licensed copies of our software are being distributed.

Is activation mandatory?

Yes. However, you have a 30-day grace period from the date you install the software. This allows you to activate the software at your convenience, while still having full access to the program. Once the 30-day grace period has ended, you will no longer be able to access the program until you activate it.

How does activation work? Are there several ways to activate?

After you install the C.D.S. software update, you can activate the software via the internet. This is the preferred and easiest method.

To activate via the internet, open the updated version of the software and follow the activation instructions provided on-screen.

If internet activation fails, you will be given the option to proceed by phone or e-mail. The instructions will be provided on-screen for the method you select.

How will activation affect me? Will project files be affected?

Aside from the few extra steps required for activation, you will not notice any difference in the way the software operates.

Project files will not be affected by this process. If you are unable to access the program due to failure to activate the software, the project files remain intact and will be available when the software is activated.

Do I decide when to activate the software?

Yes. When you open the software, you will be given the option to activate now or later. If you choose to activate later, you will receive reminder messages to activate within the 30-day grace period. You will still be granted access to the program within the grace period. After the grace period, however, you will not be able to access the program until you activate it.

What happens after the 30-day grace period expires?

If you have not activated the software, you will no longer be able to access the program. You must activate the software in order to regain access to the program.

How do I activate if I do not have internet access?

If you do not have internet access, open the C.D.S. software program and click Activate on the activation reminder pop-up screen. Enter your serial number as prompted and click Activate. Because the internet connection will fail, you will be prompted to proceed with the activation by phone. Click Yes and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the activation process.

How can I renew my license?

You will receive reminder messages when your license nears its expiration date. On the pop-up reminder screen, click Renew to go to the online order form. When you receive your renewal confirmation via e-mail, click Activate to proceed.

Click here to access the online order form now.

What usage of the product does activation allow?

Regarding TRACE 700, activation gives you full access to TRACE 700 (or TRACE 700 Load Express, TRACE 700 Load Design, TRACE 700 Chiller Plant Analyzer) under the terms of the license agreement.

How will the activation information be used?

The information will only be used to log the name of the computer being activated and the number of activations per license.

Will I have to activate after every update of my C.D.S. software program(s)?

No, you will only be required to activate the C.D.S. software when your license expires and you need to renew your license. To renew your license, you will need to complete the online order form.

Do I have to reactivate if I reformat my hard drive?

Yes, if you reformat your operating system's hard drive, you will need to reactivate any C.D.S. software program(s). The activation software will recognize the system and reissue your license during the activation process.

Will I be required to reactivate my C.D.S. software if I perform regular backups, restore my system, or perform a system upgrade?

Performing regular backups will have no effect on your C.D.S. software license. Doing a system restore or system upgrade may require you to reactivate.

What happens if my computer crashes?

If your computer crashes, you will need to reactivate your C.D.S software program(s). The activation software will recognize the system and reissue your license during the activation process.

What happens if I get a new computer and I need to install my C.D.S. software program on the new computer?

If you get a new computer, you will need to return the license from your existing computer. To do this, go to the Help menu and select Return License and Exit. When you install the C.D.S. software program on your new computer, you will be prompted to activate your license when you initially open the program.

Can I transfer the license to a different computer?

You can transfer a license to another computer. To do this you will first need to return the license from your existing computer. Go to the Help menu and select Return License and Exit. When you start the C.D.S. software program on the other computer, you will be prompted to activate your license.

Are there any differences between activating a Network vs. a Standalone installation? (TRACE 700 Only)

Yes. For network installations, TRACE 700 only needs to be activated on the Network Administration machine. To do this, the TRACE administrator must go to the Start menu and select Programs > CDS Applications > Trace 700 Network > Activate TRACE 700.

Does each client computer in a Network install have to be activated? (TRACE 700 only)

No, each client machine will read the activation information from the Network Administrator machine. Each client machine will provide license information to the users when starting TRACE to inform them of the TRACE license status.

Will other CDS software programs need to be activated?

Yes, all C.D.S. applications now require activation.
