Watt's in the News? - Volume 20

What principle building activities exhibited the largest increase in energy efficiency from 2012 to 2018?  Did any show an increase in energy intensity? If so, which ones?

This week’s big questions:

  • How has data analytics impacted energy efficiencies in buildings?

  • Other energy-saving changes?

(Hint: Think building design, construction materials, etc.)

The Energy Information Administration shared this article highlighting the increase in energy efficiency of U.S. commercial buildings.

U.S. Energy Information Administration - EIA - Independent Statistics and Analysis. U.S. commercial buildings continued to increase their energy efficiency as of 2018. (September 29, 2022). Retrieved February 8, 2023, from https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=54059

There have been a lot of articles published over the past month from a wide variety of sources expressing views on the "gas vs. electric stove" debate at the federal level. The use of natural gas goes far beyond just cooking our food. Here is a series of articles that can be shared over the next two months as we take a look at energy transformation and resources that can help identify regional production/consumption data for a variety of energy sources.

All of these resources provide support for the upper level of the BTU Crew: "Module 5 - Energy Usage in Buildings". In addition, they serve as a great introduction to the lessons HS students can learn in NC3 Data Analytics Certification #1 - "Harnessing the Power of Data" and NC3 Data Analytics Certification #2 - "Energy & Sustainability with Data Analytics."
