Hot Shopping in a Cool Mall…
Trane has helped Tanglewood Mall modernize its HVAC system with reliable, efficient equipment.
Tanglewood Mall’s original Trane chiller units were 35 years old and mall management wanted to replace the equipment, better manage utility costs, and act more environmentally friendly.
Tanglewood Mall management turned to Trane for assistance with their project. “We have a trusted partnership with Trane,” said Wendy Akers, General Manager. After completing a detailed study of the facility, Trane recommended replacing the three existing chillers with two 900-ton Trane EarthWise™ CenTraVac™ centrifugal chillers (Model CVHF910). A Trane Tracer Summit™ building automation system was installed to control all functions of the chilled water plant and cooling towers. Other improvements included installing new pumps with variable frequency drives, re-piping the chiller plant and replacing the cooling towers. Mall management was extremely pleased that the mall was never without air conditioning, even though the transfer to the new chillers took place in July. “Because of the excellent planning and staging that went on between the owner, subcontractor (GJ Hopkins), and Trane, there were very few problems and no schedule adjusting. The job was completed on-schedule and on-budget,” said Jake Repass, Tanglewood Mall’s Project Manager. “This is the best project I’ve worked on.”
Since the installation of the new, energy-efficient equipment, the cost of operating the chiller plant equipment has been reduced by 20 percent, even though the mall has expanded by 60,000 square feet since the upgrade. The mall, which was running three chillers prior to the upgrade, has only had to use one chiller for cooling, even when temperatures soared over 90 degrees F during the summer. Mall occupants have been very pleased with the consistent interior temperatures that the new system provides. “Trane’s service technicians provide us with good response time and they are well trained,” said Wendy Akers. Because of the excellent service they have always received, Tanglewood has agreed to let Trane manage the entire facility.
