Raising Students’ Appreciation for the Environment and STEM Education

Buildings are an important component of our society and they impact the sustainability of our world. They have energy coursing through their veins – heating, cooling, lighting. Buildings are responsible for 40 percent of the energy consumption in the U.S. (Source: EIA 2016). Using energy wisely is everyone’s responsibility—and young people can make a big difference! That is why we created the Trane BTU Crew™ curriculum – to engage students in using their campus as a living energy lab.

An Interactive, Flexible Educational Curriculum

BTU Crew curriculum uses hands-on, interactive learning to help students entering 4th-7th and 8th-12th grade and getting ready for high school to explore ways to make their schools and homes more energy efficient. The program is designed to:

  • engage students, teachers, parents and the community
  • create interest in various science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers
  • support critical thinking and analytical skills
  • strengthen presentation and interviewing skills

Supporting materials make each lesson easy to teach, and the concepts are readily adaptable. Curriculum educates on energy use and conservation in buildings and is divided into modules expanding on Energy 101, Energy Usage, Career Exploration, Impact of Energy, Energy Usage in Buildings, Energy Audit and Performance Analytics. Lessons take approximately 50-60 minutes each and include lesson plans, worksheets, vocabulary and a closing challenge, intended as an option for students to extend their learning beyond the lesson. Just grab a couple of supplies and you are ready to go!

Creating a More Sustainable Future

As students learn about energy, they gain greater appreciation for the environment around them and ways to conserve it. For more than 100 years, Trane has been making buildings better. We are committed to providing solutions for high performance classrooms and sustainable schools that are fiscally and environmentally responsible, and significantly improve the quality of education.
