Hello ,

According to The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and The Center for Healthcare Design, hospitals can provide healthy, comfortable and cost-effective healing environments where caregiver performance and patient healing is maximized by following a number of best practices.

The article titled 'Environment and Patient Outcomes' published in Medical Construction and Design provides you with information on best practices for improving your hospital's physical environment.

Find out if improvement opportunities exist at your hospital.

Trane survey reveals the physical environment is critical for hospital executives:

. A majority says improving the environment is an issue leaders should be engaged in.
. A majority says the connection between environment and mission level issues is Strong or Very Strong.
. 93% say connection to patient satisfaction is Important or Very Important.
. A majority says close attention to optimizing energy spend and green practices can produce financial, cultural and organizational benefits.
Best Practices for Improving Your Physical Environment

. Design new and renovation projects with close communication amongst all stakeholders, including clinical staff, around Evidence-Based Design principals
. Conduct routine monitoring and reporting of air quality in critical care and high occupancy areas
. Deploy strict pressure control strategies for positive (OR, protective environments) and negative (isolation rooms) air flow areas

These best practices can have an important effect on your mission-critical goals:

. Patients are less likely to contract HAIs and therefore generally heal quicker and have better outcomes in hospitals with healthy environments.
. Patients are more satisfied with their stay and sleep better when their room is quiet at night.
. Nurses are more energized and productive when air quality and comfort levels are optimized.
. Recruiting and retaining surgeons is easier if the environment is automated to their specifications.
