Triumphal Apartments covers about 20,000
square meters with total construction area
of 59,000 square meters in four high-rise
apartment buildings of 22 floors each. Shanghai
summers are very warm - more than 40 percent
of electricity use is for air conditioning. With
rising electricity rates the apartments needed
effective, efficient air conditioning.
Trane’s Shanghai office helped the construction
team design a central air conditioning system
using Trane chillers and ice storage. The chillers
run at night, when temperatures are cooler and
electric rates are lower, to generate ice stored
in large tanks. When the tanks are full and
before daytime electric rates go into effect, the
chillers are shut off. As daytime temperature
and apartment cooling load increases, water is
circulated through the ice tanks and apartments,
providing efficient air conditioning.
The use of ice storage and off-peak electricity
in a residential application such as Triumphal
Apartments is unique, but is proving to be a
very efficient and effective means of providing
air conditioning. Even during peak summer
temperatures, the apartments remain at less
than 80 degrees F (26 C).
Gan Bao Rong, property engineering manager,

The Trane chillers also recover rejected heat
and use it to generate hot water for the
apartments—saving more energy. Thanks in
part to these energy saving strategies, the value
per square meter at Triumphal Apartments has
increased by nearly 30 percent.

Developer Ltd., Triumphal Apartments is a
high-end luxury apartment complex with
average apartment size of 79 to 130 square
meters.
Each apartment is well decorated and has
24-hour air conditioning and hot water service
with a separate fresh air exchange system in
each apartment. The project was completed
in August, 2005.
